I wanted to put a fresh thread through the eye of the HOD needle, the idea derived by the Blood Sweat & Tears off-shoot topic in the elusive marklucas's Buddy Rich Today.

What's the most you've ever heard a drummer say (in a fill) with the least notes?

To me the champ is Paul MaCartney's Maybe I'm Amazed, the two hits on distinctively different snares to set up the guitar solo.

But there's got to be something hipper than that. [img]confused.gif[/img] Jeff, maybe?

I went through a phase of playing with only a floor tom, bass, and snare for drums. It was cool, and I found myself doing a lot of fun stuff, but I guess it was only that; a phase. Sorry to be off-topic. Maybe I'll try playing minimalist again, as the trends seem to be going the opposite direction.

Amen to that! Of course that's a 32nd note fill, right? Not exactly "minimalist". [img]smile.gif[/img] But it will slay you! I agree.

Five.........to many to list. Little Village, AJ Croce, there are a few on AJ's record That's Me At THe Bar in which Keltner produced.
Of course his work with The Dan, Gary Wright. With Keltner, it's always minimal.......well, except for maybe Josie.

Jim Gordan.......The song Here At The Western World, a track only released on a greatest hits package by Steely Dan.........so simple, the fills which lead into the verses. Classic feel by Gordan.

Keltner with Neil Young, the dvd Live at Red Rocks.....Keltner playing all while rain is pouring down on that beautiful Timeless Timber kit, he even brings a hair dryer out at one point to help dry some of the water off.

The best fill ever is....


Carlos Vega on the James Taylor "Live" Double CD set. It's during a song called 'Only One' of the second disk. Carlos gets a 'break' where it's just vocals and drums. He grooves the whole way, and halfway through he plays a fill.

Just two snares and a tom, not even a crash cymbal in sight...

[Henry II]

Stix Hooper, drummer for The (Jazz) Crusaders with Joe Sample on piano, is one of the most tasteful, minimalist drummers I know of.

Also, Harvey Mason can be an amazingly tasteful and minimalist drummer, when he want's to be.
